Following the merger with UHSM in October 2017, our vascular surgery and interventional radiology departments will now combine to create the leading vascular provider service in Greater Manchester and through our collaborations with Salford Royal, Royal Bolton and Stepping Hill Hospitals.
The Vascular Unit provides high levels of training and education to staff and has an extremely active research programme, as part of our continuing drive to provide care of the highest quality to our patients.
All the index vascular investigations and surgical and radiological interventions are provided within the service, and submitted to the National Vascular Registry for governance. We offer elective surgery in 2 state of the art hybrid theatre suites, opened in June 2014 and the first in Greater Manchester. Emergency cover is provided on a Consultant-led 24/7 basis.
Subspecialty teams work in fenestrated and complex aneurysm stentgrafts (FEVAR) for which we are the Greater Manchester specialist centre, and ultradistal and hybrid lower limb revascularisations particularly of the diabetic leg.
There are six fulltime specialist Vascular and Endovascular Surgeons on the team, 5 based at Manchester Royal and one based at Bolton Royal Hospital offering 24/7 specialist cover 365 days a year.
Patients are cared for on the specialist ward of the Manchester Vascular Unit, with dedicated vascular physio and Occupational therapy teams and specialist amputee rehab service. The ward team are supplemented by 3 vascular Nurse Specialists who offer tissue viability, wound/ulcer care, preoperative assessment, hyperhidrosis treatment, and the in-house supervised risk reduction and exercise classes.
We have a highly experienced team of Vascular Interventional Radiologists offering 24/7 cover for elective and emergency interventions.
We are supported by the Trust’s vascular laboratory, which provides diagnostic and surveillance testing, and also by the vascular radiology department, which diagnoses and treats vascular conditions.
We have a couple of super managers who look after us well, only occasionally requiring tea and chocolate biscuits.
