Arrow In this section

The UK government has outlined a comprehensive strategy to combat antimicrobial resistance (AMR) through its 20-year vision, aiming to contain and control AMR by 2040.

Key Components of the Strategy:

  1. 20-Year Vision (2019–2040): This long-term plan sets the overarching goal of containing and controlling AMR within two decades.

    Vision for antimicrobial resistance

  2. 5-Year National Action Plans: To achieve the 20-year vision, the government has implemented successive 5-year action plans detailing specific objectives and initiatives:

    • 2019–2024 Action Plan: Focused on optimizing antimicrobial use, reducing the need for antimicrobials, and supporting the development of new treatments.

    • 2024–2029 Action Plan: Building upon previous efforts, this plan emphasizes restricting unnecessary antimicrobial use in humans and animals, strengthening surveillance of drug-resistant infections, and incentivizing the development of new treatments.

NHS England’s Role:

NHS England plays a pivotal role in implementing these action plans by:

  • Optimizing Antimicrobial Use: Promoting appropriate prescribing practices to ensure antimicrobials are used only when necessary.

  • Reducing Unintentional Exposure: Implementing measures to minimize patient exposure to broad-spectrum antibiotics.

  • Supporting New Developments: Encouraging the development of new antimicrobial treatments and diagnostics.

These efforts are part of a broader commitment to safeguard the efficacy of antimicrobials, ensuring they remain effective tools in treating infections for future generations.
