Our service

Our service mainly treats skin cancers which include:

  • Basal cell carcinoma (BCC)
  • Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC)
  • Early-stage melanoma
  • Other non-cancer skin problems

These cancers can occur anywhere on the body, but most of our patients come to us for the head and neck areas. Most of these surgeries take place at Wythenshawe Hospital.

Treatments provided

We care for patients referred by their GP or dermatologist with suspected skin cancer or worrying skin lesions. Our services include:
  • Taking biopsies
  • The complete removal of these lesions, which is also treatment

The Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery department specialises in the surgical management of these conditions

Personalised cancer care

Our individual cancer care services are designed to always provide full support in the patient journey, in line with national guidelines for skin cancer.

Health Needs Assessment (HNA) and Treatment Summaries:

We do in depth Health Needs Assessments to understand the needs and worries of each patient. Based on these assessments, we make detailed treatment summaries that show the diagnosis, treatment plan, and follow-up care.

Health and Wellbeing Support:

Our team offers a range of health and wellbeing services:

  • Psychological support
  • Nutritional advice
  • Physical rehabilitation

These services aim to improve the quality of life during and after treatment.

Educational Resources:

We provide patients with access to educational resources and support materials including:

  • Leaflets on post-surgical care
  • Wound management
  • Skin protection

These resources are developed in line with the guidelines from the British Association of Dermatologists (BAD) and the British Association of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons (BAPRAS).

Multidisciplinary Approach:

Our multidisciplinary team approach means that patients who require MDT input receives coordinated care from several specialists, including oncologists, dermatologists, plastic surgeons, Histopathologists and cancer nurse specialists.

Patient Empowerment:

We encourage patients to be actively involved in their care, providing them with tools and information to make informed decisions about their treatment and lifestyle adjustments.

Our goal is to ensure that every patient receives personalized, compassionate, and effective care tailored to their individual needs.

Follow up care

Our follow-up care is structured to ensure ongoing support and monitoring for our patients after their initial treatment. Patients can expect regular follow-up appointments to monitor their recovery, check for any signs of recurrence, and manage any long-term effects of treatment.

Personalized Stratified Follow-Up (PSFU):

We offer Personalized Stratified Follow-Up (PSFU), which tailors the follow-up schedule to the individual needs of each patient based on their risk of recurrence and other factors. This approach allows us to provide more personalized care and ensure that patients receive the appropriate level of monitoring and support.

We provide patients with comprehensive advice and resources to help them manage their health post-treatment. This includes guidance on wound care, skin protection, and lifestyle adjustments to reduce the risk of recurrence.
