Clinical Practice and Experience
Keith has over 20-years experience in all aspects of both non-invasive and invasive cardiac diagnostics. He is clinically proficient in providing and interpreting procedures such as resting ECG, ambulatory cardiac monitoring, echocardiography, stress echocardiography, haemodynamic assessments and monitoring during cardiac catheterisation procedures. Keith is currently responsible for the clinical leadership/management of the largest UK cardiac diagnostic services; Manchester Foundation Trust has circa. 120 clinical physiologists/scientists who provide a full spectrum of cardiac diagnostic testing at tertiary level.
In addition to providing clinical leadership and expertise in all generic areas of diagnostics, Keith actively delivers weekly clinical autonomous diagnostic testing and interpretation in complex areas of cardiac diagnostics, which include specialised assessments in structural valvular heart disease and stress echocardiography for the detection of coronary artery disease and structural valvular heart disease. He also has multiple leadership roles in other tertiary units including Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital which has enabled him to have exposure to differing healthcare providers and gain knowledge of differing clinical practice between tertiary and secondary care hospital providers.
With extensive clinical experience and clinical leadership within a hospital setting, Keith has held multiple national leadership roles, including Vice President and recently President of the British Society of Echocardiography. He is also a national elected member of the British Cardiac Society education committee. Keith acts as Clinical lead for NHSE workstream on diagnostics and outpatient services and is an active member of NHSE/I Cardiac Pathway Implementation Programme board. Currently, he is the chair for the British Cardiac Society Cardiac Physiologists/Cardiac scientists Council.
Clinical Interests
Keith has a clinical interest in all areas of cardiac diagnostic testing in both non-invasive and invasive areas. Echocardiography is his specialist area of practice with specialised interests in stress echocardiography, valvular heart disease, and detection of coronary heart disease.
Research Interests
Keith is actively involved in multiple research projects which include areas such as, the effect of potassium and cardiac arrhythmia post coronary artery bypass surgery. He is involved in the clinical steering committee for the British Society Echocardiography National Stress Echo Practice registry. Keith has successfully run a national core lab for analysis of echo data as part of the UK TAVI research and has been successful in being awarded a grant from the European Society Echocardiography to deliver a core lab function for the 10-year TAVI registry.
Management Experience
Keith currently manages the largest Cardiac Diagnostic Unit in the UK across five sites. He has held the position of Consultant Cardiac Scientist at Manchester University Foundation Trust in 2013, and prior to this he held the role as Lead Cardiac Physiologist at the Liverpool Heart and Chest hospital. Manchester University Foundation Trust has circa .120 cardiac scientists/physiologists who deliver the full spectrum of cardiac diagnostic testing. Keith is clinically and professionally responsible for this group and, whilst there is a cascade system of management, as the head of service he is responsible for ensuring the clinical standards of all services delivered within his unit.

Teaching and Training
Keith has delivered over 100 lectures in cardiac diagnostic investigations and interpretation at local, regional and national levels. He has supported and advised Higher Education Institutes, such as Manchester Metropolitan University, in design, delivery, implementation and assessment of foundation level degree programmes, undergraduate BSc programs in cardiac science, MSc cardiac science, and PhD doctoral programmes. The cardiology departments which Keith leads currently host >20 trainees across the complete spectrum of cardiac science education. Further, he has been invited to present at both European Echocardiography Meetings and American Society of Echocardiography annual conferences.

Professor Martin Stout – Consultant Cardiac Physiologist, Vice President British Society for Echocardiography, PhD, MSc, BSc, FESC, FBSE
Martin previously held a joint clinical and academic position as academic lead for the scientist training programmes in Cardiac Science at both masters and taught doctoral levels with Manchester Metropolitan University and has since gained a visiting professor position due to his continued work with the university in developing novel training programmes across Cardiac Science. He has been teaching on undergraduate and postgraduate programmes for over fifteen years. He is also the lead editor for the new nationally developed curriculum for the scientist training programme in cardiac science. He undertook his PhD in Sheffield, completing in 2011 and investigated the effect of testosterone replacement therapy in males with heart failure. He has published over 30 articles in leading journals and also contributes to national guidelines for the appropriate use of echocardiography. He is an active PhD supervisor in the area of cardiac physiology and has successfully received grant funding to support PhD studentships and his own research interests.

Andrea Arnold – Principal Cardiac Physiologist, Regional Cardiac Clinical Tutor, CRM
Andrea is a Principal Cardiac Physiologist with over 30 years of experience. Andrea manages a large dedicated team of Cardiac Physiologists at Wythenshawe Hospital where she is the manager of Invasive Services and Cardiac Rhythm Management. She trained at Bury District General and is specialised in cardiac rhythm management with her primary focus being electrophysiology and loop recorder implantation. Andrea also has extensive experience in both the private sector and as a Clinical Applications Specialist/Sales for GE Medical systems supporting catheter lab electrophysiology and non-invasive procedures. She began at Wythenshawe in 2004 as Regional Cardiac Clinical Tutor for the undergraduate training program in Healthcare Science in conjunction with Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU) where she has been a Senior Honorary Lecturer for the BSc component for over 10 years.
Andrea is also instrumental in the organisation and delivery of the MSc program in Healthcare Science at MMU. She is heavily involved in the delivery and placement of Specialist Training at both undergraduate and postgraduate level for cardiac trainees and is dedicated to ensuring that her students gain the right experience in order to succeed as future Cardiac Physiologists.
Cathy Barman – Expert Cardiac Physiologist – Education Lead, Imaging ASCST, MSCST
Cathy began training at Manchester Royal Infirmary, as a Physiological Measurement Technician in Cardiology in 1986, after completing a full time Higher National Diploma in Applied Biology at Manchester Polytechnic, now Manchester Metropolitan University. After gaining experience in all aspects of non-invasive cardiology Cathy continued to advance her career moving to Wythenshawe Hospital gaining experience in all catheter lab work including electrophysiology and ablation techniques. Cathy became involved in teaching and training across Greater Manchester, lecturing at Manchester Metropolitan University, delivering education at both undergraduate and postgraduate level for physiologist and doctors alike and specialising in echocardiography with transthoracic BSE accreditation. After a few years, helping to set up a new catheter lab suite, at Warrington District General Cathy returned to Wythenshawe Hospital as an Expert Cardiac Physiologist. An exciting development was to coordinate what became an annual, Basic Hands-on Echo course held in the Education and Research Centre here at the Wythenshawe site with around 30 international delegates. Cathy attained BSE Transoesophageal echo accreditation and teaches on the annual Hands-on Cardiothoracic Anaesthetic TOE course. Cathy has been involved with the British Society of Echocardiography in both TTE and TOE accreditation for many years as departmental mentor and national examiner and was delighted to have been nominated as a BSE Echo Hero in July 2021!

Samantha Thorn - Expert Lead Cardiac Scientist/ Physiologist in Cardiac Device Management MSc, BSc (Hons), BHRS, CEPS
Soon after this time, Sam was approached by a member of the North West Healthcare Science Network and became the first PTP board member of the new North West Trainees Network Board (NWTNB). The board is a unique network for PTP and STP trainees that is committed to supporting and developing all trainees across the North West. A year later after participating as a board member, Sam became co-chair of the NWTNB and led the board to organise and develop trainee events that invited key speakers such as Professor Sue Hill OBE. Due to her commitment and leadership on the board, Sam achieved the Rising Star Award at the Chief Scientific Officers Healthcare Scientist awards in 2014.
During this time Sam’s clinical focus was specialist training in Cardiac Rhythm Management and she obtained her British Heart Rhythm Society (BHRS) Devices qualification in 2016. Following this, Sam wanted to develop both her clinical and leadership skills further and she applied for the in-service STP programme in 2015. In 2018 she graduated and received a masters with distinction in Cardiac Clinical Sciences and further successfully registered as a Cardiac Clinical Scientist on the Healthcare Professions Council (HCPC) register. Since, Sam has gained a further qualification in Electrophysiology from the International Board of Heart Rhythm Examiners (IBHRE).
Sam is experienced at delivering education as a guest lecturer for the PTP and STP Cardiac programmes based at Manchester Metropolitan University and independent courses related to CRM at a local and national level to a multidisciplinary audience.
Wendy Gamlin – Expert Cardiac Physiologist – Transthoracic Echocardiography Lead, BSE elected member
She has taken an active role in the training of junior staff for the last 14 years, becoming an Examiner / Logbook Scrutineer for both the Society of Cardiological Science & Technology and the BSE. She has mentored several successful candidates in BSE Transthoracic Accreditation, becoming a Senior Marker for the BSE and taking the role of National Lead for the Practical Scanning Station on the practical assessment days.
Wendy is a guest lecturer at Manchester Metropolitan University, she organises and facilitates teaching for the “Ultrasound Imaging in Cardiac Disease” module of the Scientist Training Programme. She delivers teaching on specialist block weeks for both the Scientist and Practitioner Training Programmes, and the PG Certificate Echo Training Programme. In addition, she regularly delivers teaching on the Manchester Focussed Intensive Care Echocardiography (FICE) course.

Iain Campbell – Advanced Specialist Physiologist, EP Training Lead, CRM. BSc, CCDS, CEPS
Iain is an experienced senior member of our Cardiac Rhythm Management team and Electrophysiology Training Lead. Iain Gained his BSc (hons) Clinical Physiology degree in 2007 whilst training and working at Wythenshawe Hospital across all areas of invasive and non-invasive cardiology. Taking a real interest in pacing and electrophysiology he then joined St Jude Medical. Over the next 6 years he became a highly regarded technical specialist in both high voltage devices (ICDs and CRT devices) and electrophysiology (EP). He was one of the few specialists in the country able to offer support across all areas of the SJM portfolio. This included the aforementioned cardiac devices, but also all EP systems, both EP Workmate recording system and Contact / non-Contact 3-D mapping (NaVX and Array). In addition to supporting cases, during this period, Iain frequently provided teaching and training in a multitude of scenarios, from lecture theatres in Teesside and Leicester University, SJM office-based education to local hospital teaching and even patient support group sessions. During his tenure he completed certifications in IBHRE devices and IBHRE EP.
Iain has since worked independently supporting both simple and complex EP procedures for both NHS and private industry. Iain re-joined the Wythenshawe CRM team in 2018 and is keen to share his wealth of experience with the next generation. One of Iain’s current projects is the development of an in-depth training program for new EP Physiologists.

Amy Burt - Advanced Specialist Cardiac Physiologist, CRM Training Lead BSc, CCDS
Amy trained at the Royal Papworth Hospital in Cambridge and achieved her BSc in Clinical Physiology in 2009. Before this she completed a BSc in Psychology and Biology. In 2010, Amy left Papworth to go travelling, whilst away she worked at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Melbourne Australia as a Cardiac Physiologist. This is where she started with her interest in pacing. On returning to the UK she worked as a Locum Physiologist in several centres before taking a permanent post at Wythenshawe in 2015. It is here where she developed her advanced skills in cardiac rhythm management and acquired her IBHRE CCDS certification. She is now an integral member of our cardiac rhythm management team and joint CRM Training Lead. Amy is heavily involved in CRM education and has developed and delivers our own CRM device Advanced Training Pathway to ensure our trainees get tailored training suited to their specific needs.
Janet Kipping - Advanced Specialist Cardiac Physiologist, CRM Training Lead BSc, BHRS
After completing her BSc (Hons) Biomedical Sciences, Janet began training as a student Cardiac Physiologist at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals in 2004. Having qualified with BSc (Hons) Clinical Physiology (Cardiology) in 2007, Janet specialised in cath lab and Cardiac Rhythm Management (CRM) devices. She obtained IBHRE CCDS in 2011 and moved into industry in 2017 as territory sales manager and technical support for a CRM medical device company, supporting a range of device implants, follow-up and delivering training for staff and students involved in device management. Janet returned to the NHS in 2019 as an Advanced Specialist Cardiac Physiologist at Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust and is currently involved in delivering the CRM device advanced training pathway, supporting post-graduates to achieve in-house device competency and BHRS/IBHRE device accreditation. Janet passed the BHRS Devices exam in May 2021 as part of her reaccreditation.
Kent Cannon – Advanced Specialist Cardiac Scientist (HCPC Accredited/ Physiologist, CRM MRes, MSc, BSc, CCDS
After achieving his BSc (Hons) in Biomedical Science, Kent began his cardiology career in cardiovascular research, completing a MRes at Newcastle University in 2014. In 2015, Kent then turned his eye to clinical work and applying research directly to patients by gaining a position on the Scientist Training Programme (STP). Having completed the STP programme and achieving a distinction in 2018 he also went on to complete the International Board of Heart Rhythm Examiners (IBHRE) Cardiac Device certification in the same year. Kent then gained a permanent post at Manchester University Foundation trust. After 12 months he was promoted to Advanced Specialist Cardiac Physiologist and Kent now specialises in advanced pacing, electrophysiology and loop Implantation/ explanation with a strong motivation towards advancing the role of physiologists through advanced practice. With that motivation, Kent is involved in the STP shortlisting process and is a guest lecturer for both the PTP and STP programmes for Manchester Metropolitan University as well as providing training at other events for in-service healthcare professionals. In addition to the above he has a persistent interest in bringing the NHS into the 21st century, dabbling in all necessary areas in an effort to improve workflow, enhance efficiency and make computers do the (time consuming) work they were designed to do. Recently, this has involved Kent sitting on various committees as part of the harmonisation of the Manchester University Foundation Trust hospitals.
Shaun Heap – Specialist Cardiac Physiologist, CRM MSc, BSc, CCDS
Shaun entered the physiology arena in 2011 completing a BSc in Physiological Science from The University of Bristol, tailoring his studies towards cardiac science in his 3rd year and writing a dissertation on atrial myocyte calcium handling in the onset of atrial tachyarrhythmias. Following this, Shaun spent several years working in industry, involved with corporate/occupation health where he carried out a range of medical screening and investigations including ECG, CPEX and spirometry. In 2020 Shaun completed the Scientist Training Programme (STP) in Cardiac Science (MSc, distinction) specialising in cardiac rhythm management and qualified as a HCPC registered Cardiac Clinical Scientist. In 2020 he also completed the IBHRE certified cardiac device specialist (CCDS) exam. Shaun is actively involved with teaching on the PTP and STP programmes based at Manchester Metropolitan University and also delivers lectures to other medical professionals across the NHS.
Charlie Kilby-Pollard – Specialist Cardiac Physiologist, CRM BSc
After undertaking placements as part of the Practitioner Training Programme (PTP) with Manchester Metropolitan University and training under many of the Cardiac physiology team at Wythenshawe hospital, Charlie joined Wythenshawe Hospital in 2019, graduating with a BSc (Hons) in Healthcare Science (Cardiac Physiology) shortly thereafter. Since then, he has begun specialist training in cardiac rhythm management and joined the education team, becoming involved in providing education and support to placement students as well as delivering teaching on the PTP programme at Manchester Metropolitan University as well as to various other disciplines within the NHS.
