The redevelopment of North Manchester General Hospital, backed by up to £1.5 billion in investment, is a “once-in-a-generation opportunity” to transform healthcare in the area.
As our Trust Chief Executive, Mark Cubbon explains, this redevelopment will reshape healthcare services, bringing world-class care to local communities.

As we recently announced, the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care confirmed the new North Manchester General Hospital rebuild for Wave 1 on 20 January 2025. This marks a significant milestone for the hospital and the local community.
Mark Cubbon, Trust Chief Executive for Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust, and Bev Craig, Leader of Manchester City Council, expressed their enthusiasm for the project, highlighting the Government’s commitment to the future of North Manchester General Hospital and its plans for a full rebuild.
The start date for the rebuild could be as early as 2027/28, with enabling works on site already progressing significantly. This redevelopment is not just about a hospital; it is an exciting plan for civic-led healthcare regeneration.
The green light for the rebuild is a massive boost for the North Manchester Strategy, the largest urban redevelopment programme in the North of England. The new North Manchester General Hospital will not only provide excellent healthcare but also improve the health and quality of life for the communities it serves.
Manchester will always fight for its local communities, and this redevelopment will save lives, tackle health inequalities, drive regeneration for the whole area, and save money. This rebuild is the lynchpin of that vision, and we are ready to make it a reality.
