Spinal Surgery

The Spinal Deformities Team manages children and adolescents with spinal deformity, spinal trauma and other orthopaedic spinal conditions. More than 100 surgical procedures are undertaken annually.

The department has a particular expertise in the care and management of children and young people with neuromuscular conditions.  A joint satellite clinic with the neurology team at Leeds General Infirmary is held quarterly.

The Specialist Nurses hold nurse-led clinics for pre-operative assessment, ward discharge, monitoring with surface imaging and magnetic rod lengthening. They are also responsible for the conservative management of infantile idiopathic scoliosis, including the serial plaster-casting programme. A multidisciplinary approach to care is provided by clinicians, nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists and orthotists.  All spinal management, care and  treatment  is carried out at RMCH.
