If your baby needs transferring they will be cared for by the neonatal transport service known as Connect North West.
Connect NW is a service that covers a large geographical area including Greater Manchester, Cheshire and Merseyside and Lancashire and South Cumbria, as well as an out of hours service for North Wales.
Connect NW aims to undertake all emergency and pre-planned transfers of babies between referring and admitting neonatal units and will also undertake planned out-patient appointments. The team will, when circumstances dictate, also transfer babies in and out of the designated geographical area, thus ensuring that the care of babies is not restricted by the availability of intensive care cots in an individual unit.
The team is available 24 hours a day and has two bases – one in Manchester and one in Liverpool. The team is made up of doctors, advanced neonatal nurse practitioners (ANNPs) and nurses, all of whom are trained and experienced in transporting babies.
If your baby is being transferred for an out-patient appointment or return journey to a unit closer to home, it may be possible for one parent to accompany their baby on this journey.
