Urology (NMGH)

Who is the service for?

This service is for all patients, male and female, either referred in by their GP or seen as an emergency with benign and malignant conditions of the urinary tract (kidney, ureter, bladder, prostate, urethra) or the male reproductive system (penis, testicles, fertility).

Introduction

The Urology service at North Manchester has undergone several changes in the last couple of years, the first major change occurred in April 2022 which saw the management of the North Manchester General Hospital moving away from the Northern Care Alliance to the Manchester Foundation Trust. This began the start of the disaggregation of the Urology service which culminated on the 8th of April 2024 with the withdrawal of Urology workforce provided by the Northern Care Alliance and the full workforce provision being provided by the Manchester Foundation Trust.

Services offered

The North Manchester Urology service offers a full range of urological assessment diagnosis and treatment for all aspects of adult Urology. We aim to provide the highest achievable standards of care and some of the conditions we currently treat are:

  • Bladder Cancer
  • Bladder Stones
  • Testicular Cancer
  • Kidney Cancer
  • Kidney Infection
  • Kidney Stones
  • Prostate Cancer
  • Prostate Disease
  • Urinary Incontinence
  • Urinary Infection
  • Erectile Dysfunction
  • Ejaculation Problems

The Emergency department at North Manchester is available 7 days a week, 24 hours a day for all emergency Urology referrals. Most patients can be treated and discharged the same day, although any patients who require an inpatient admission will be transferred to the Manchester Royal Infirmary for further treatment and specialist care.

Non-emergency Services are available Monday to Friday 08:00 to 17:00 excluding Bank Holidays. Patients will generally be seen by a Urologist (surgeon) in an outpatients clinic when referred to the service but may be seen by a Specialist Nurse.

From the first appointment, it is likely that diagnostic tests will be undertaken on the day or arranged for a later date. Diagnostic tests are carried out by a number of different specialists including specialist nurses, surgeons, radiologists and ultrasound staff.

Patients seen at North Manchester General Hospital who require an elective surgical procedure in theatre will be added to the waiting list for surgery. We aim to offer patients a theatre date at their closest hospital, however certain conditions and subspeciality operating means surgery may also or only be offered at any or one of the following sites, Manchester Royal Infirmary, Wythenshawe hospital or Trafford General Hospital.
