Who is the service for?
Patients are referred from a variety of specialties, the main ones being Neurology, Medicine, Paediatrics, Psychiatry and orthopaedics. Patients are referred for a variety of reasons including unexplained blackouts, seizures, excessive day time sleepiness, inflammation of the muscles and trapped nerves.
What does the service provide?
The Neurophysiology Department provides a service that diagnoses and monitors disease by measuring the electrical activity of the brain, spinal cord, nerves and muscles. You may be referred for one of a number of tests. There are 3 main types:
Electroencephalography (EEG) – A recording of the electrical signals from the brain.
Evoked Potentials (EP) – A test of the function of various parts of your brain and spinal cord.
Nerve Conduction Studies and Electromyography (NCS/EMG) – A test to find out whether your nerves/muscles are working properly.
Who will patients meet?
Reception Staff – Greets patients/visitors entering the department
Consultant Neurophysiologist – Performs NCS/EMG. The consultant also provides diagnostic reports on all the investigations carried out by the Healthcare Scientists.
Healthcare Scientists – Perform a wide range of neurophysiological investigations, the main ones being EEG, EP and NCS.
When is the service available?
The department is open Monday to Friday 8:00am to 5:30pm.

The department is based at North Manchester General Hospital, Level 1, Block J.
