The Manchester Screening Centre provides Bowel Cancer Screening Services for around 1.2 million people in the South of Greater Manchester.
Bowel cancer screening aims to detect bowel cancer at an early stage, in people with no symptoms, when treatment is more likely to be effective.
Bowel cancer affects around 1 in 20 people in the UK, is the third most common cancer and the second leading cause of cancer deaths in the UK. Regular bowel cancer screening has been shown to reduce the risk of dying from bowel cancer by 16%.
The screening programme is offered nationally from the age of 60-75, and involves a screening kit being sent to home addresses. Detailed instructions are included on what to do. Once screening kits have been tested, if a patient had an unclear or abnormal result they will be invited to retest, or to visit the local screening centre for a colonoscopy.
The Manchester Screening Centres are based at:
What is a colonoscopy?
A colonoscopy is an investigation that involves looking directly at the lining of the large bowel.
You will be offered a sedative and then a thin flexible tube with a tiny camera attached (a Colonoscope) is passed into the back passage and guided around the bowel.
There is also a light attached which allows the colonoscopist to see the inside of the bowel on a TV screen.
Sometimes a biopsy may be taken and if polyps are present they can mostly be removed using a wire loop that is passed down the Colonoscope tube. These specimens are then sent to the laboratory for analysis.
Patients will be called the day after their colonoscopy, to ensure they are well and clear on the outcome of the test. They will then be offered the opportunity to book a post-investigation appointment to discuss the full results.
This will take place within 7-14 days of the procedure.
