Be there when it matters, volunteer with us – ALL HERE FOR YOU

Make a meaningful impact in your community – support patients, visitors and NHS teams across Manchester and Trafford.

Volunteers are an essential part of life at Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust (MFT). Every day, they help us create a welcoming and supportive environment across our hospitals and services – from greeting visitors to assisting with wayfinding and patient support.

Who can volunteer?

We welcome volunteers aged 16 and over at our major hospital sites, including:

  • Oxford Road Campus (including Manchester Royal Infirmary, Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital and more)
  • Wythenshawe Hospital, Trafford General, Withington and Altrincham Hospitals
  • North Manchester General Hospital

Why volunteer with us?

Volunteering with MFT is a rewarding way to:

  • Support your local community and make a positive difference to people’s hospital experience.
  • Develop new skills and confidence through hands-on roles and teamwork.
  • Connect with others from all walks of life who share your passion for helping.
  • Have the opportunity to work towards National Volunteering Certificate

Please be aware that volunteering is not work experience. Volunteering at MFT isn’t clinical work or NHS work experience – it’s a role built around supporting our colleagues and the people who come through our doors.

What kinds of volunteer roles are available?

We’ll work with you to find a role that matches your interests and strengths. Examples include:

  • Meet & Greet at receptions and welcome desks
  • Wayfinding and patient companion support
  • Support in adult and children wards and clinics
  • Partnership roles with charities and community groups

We also work with partner organisations such as Radio Lollipop, Macmillan Cancer Support, Pets as Therapy and more to offer varied and rewarding experiences.

Your commitment

You choose how much time you can give – most volunteers contribute around 2–3 hours a week, giving you flexibility while ensuring your contribution makes a real difference.
