Special interests

Multidisciplinary management of children with complex medical conditions particularly cardiac disorders and epidermolysis bullosa, dental care for children with cleft lip and/or palate.


Biography

Joanna is from Birmingham originally but trained in Newcastle for six years before completing vocational training in a dental practice in Coventry and a number of Senior House Officer posts in the Midlands. She worked in the community dental services in North Warwickshire for three years before starting specialist training at Birmingham Dental and Children’s Hospitals. She entered the specialist list in Paediatric Dentistry in 2013 and then worked at the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne as a senior registrar for eight months before returning to Birmingham to complete her paediatric dentistry training and MPhil.

Joanna is a member of Royal College of Surgeons, England, and currently the secretary of the Paediatric Dentistry Cardiac Clinical Excellence Network. The Network is working to develop more robust guidance and advice for the dental management of children with cardiac disease. She is also an active member of the Craniofacial Society Paediatric Dentistry Clinical Excellence Network and works as a consultant in paediatric dentistry for the North West North Wales Cleft Lip and Palate Network for four sessions a week and attends MDT clinics at Alder Hey children’s hospital.

Outside of work she enjoys running, yoga and baking.

Joanna’s research papers include: BMedSci 2001 ‘Dental Erosion and Children’s Drinks’ – Qualitative research on the knowledge, attitudes and behaviour of schoolchildren, MPhil 2012-2016 ‘Pulp treatments for non-vital primary molars’- Pilot randomised controlled trial on different techniques for non-vital primary molars.
