If you are experiencing eating difficulties and think that you may need some specialist support, you or your family/carer can self-refer directly into the service through contacting us on 0161 701 0447 and requesting to speak to one of our practitioners. If you prefer, you can also email a summary or question to mftceds@mft.nhs.uk.

With consent from the family, we also accept referrals from:

  • GPs
  • Health professionals
  • Social care professionals
  • Anyone working with young people and families

If you are unsure if you are appropriate for a specialist eating disorder service, then please contact us for further advice.

What happens next?

We offer all our young people an assessment within four weeks and within one week for those identified as urgent.

The assessment process includes:

  • Face to face initial assessment appointment. Typically, this involves two practitioners meeting with the young person and family, but there will also be an option for the young person to speak to a practitioner on their own if preferred.
  • The initial appointment is an opportunity to gather information around eating difficulties and assess what further support will be required. During this appointment, you will be asked questions around your eating difficulties. Examples of such questions include, “When did the eating difficulties startt?” and “How is it impacting your day-to-day life?”
  • Physical health monitoring: This is done by measuring height and weight, and checking blood pressure and pulse. Sometimes you may need blood tests and other medical investigations, and we can arrange this if necessary.
  • We may also require permission to speak to other professionals in the young person’s life, such as GP and school.
