Zero Tolerance Policy

MFT (Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust) follows the NHS’s Zero Tolerance Policy, meaning they have a strict “no-nonsense” approach to any violence, aggression, abuse (verbal or physical), or harassment (racism, sexism, homophobia, etc.) against staff, patients, or visitors, ensuring staff can work without fear. This policy includes immediate police involvement, removal from practice lists, and potentially other severe measures for unacceptable behaviour, though they consider patient illness when dealing with challenging situations, aiming for respect and dignity for all.

Facilities

Inpatient services are based on Pearce Ward, a specially designed 20-bed inpatient unit for inpatient CF care and 2 designated day care beds.  All patients are cared for in separate single rooms designed to optimise clinical care whilst also being comfortable and pleasant places to stay.  Each room includes a work area, television, refrigerator, fitted units and en-suite facilities.  There is a separate area for making up drugs.

There is a dedicated kitchen on Pearce Ward to provide specialist meals for the patients. They receive 3 hot meals a day. In addition to the specialist CF meal, the chefs can make specific meals for patients with specific dietary requirements.

The ward also provides a separate room for relatives, physiotherapy treatment rooms and protected parking is provided nearby for CF patients.

It is important to recognise that although we try to make patients’ stays as comfortable and as homely as possible, the priority is to achieve good clinical care.  Patients are expected to actively participate in all aspects of their care.  Patients wishing to leave the hospital for short periods should discuss this with members of the medical team or nursing staff beforehand and should not be absent for more than two hours at a time or after 8pm.

There is a CF consultant cover each day and 2 x multidisciplinary CF ward rounds weekly, Tuesday and Thursday mornings.

Because of the risks of cross-infection, patients are discouraged from mixing with each other on the ward.  In addition, we have two special rooms for those with infections that need isolation.

Admissions

On the day of a planned admission, you will be contacted by the CF Triage service to make you aware your bed is available. When you come onto the ward you will be allocated your room and a nurse to admit you. The nursing staff will complete your admission and organise IV access, take admission samples and complete any necessary risk assessments. If you would like to self-medicate any of your medicines, please speak to the nurse looking after you and an assessment will be completed. We ask that you bring in your medication from home along with any equipment you may need i.e. NIV/nebulisers. The medical team will also complete your admission, and you will usually be seen by appropriate members of the MDT for you.

If you require an emergency admission, please contact the CF Triage service hyperlink triage page in office hours or the main ward line out of hours and you will be triaged and advised of your safest options. If you attend Wythenshawe A&E please let Pearce Ward know so we can arrange transfer to us as soon as we are able. If you attend any other A&E department, please let the CF Triage service know in office hours/Pearce Ward out of hours.

Visitors

We have open visiting times but ask that visitors only attend between the hours of 9am-8pm and that they are well enough to be visiting you in hospital. We also ask that visitors be mindful of the need for you to receive optimal clinical care and therefore you plan visits around treatment times.
