The NIHR Manchester Clinical Research Facility

The NIHR Manchester Clinical Research Facility (CRF) comprises four dedicated experimental medicine research units across Greater Manchester; based at Manchester Royal Infirmary (MRI), Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital (RMCH), Wythenshawe Hospital – all part of Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust, and The Christie hospital.

Manchester CRF enables cutting-edge research across a diverse range of clinical areas, through world-class facilities; providing a safe, quality assured environment to deliver clinical research studies in both adults and children.

National Aspergillosis Centre

The National Aspergillosis Centre provides long-term care for patients with chronic pulmonary aspergillosis which is caused by the fungal mould aspergillus and affects the respiratory system but can spread to anywhere in the body.

Manchester Adult Cystic Fibrosis Centre

The Manchester Adult Cystic Fibrosis Centre is a purpose-built, 22-bed facility, which is one of the largest and longest established in the UK, treating adult patients from all over the North West.

North West Severe Asthma Hub

The North West Severe Asthma Hub is the network lead for patients with Severe Asthma, coordinating care including novel biologic therapies – treatment to stimulate or restore the ability of the immune system to fight infection and disease – and bronchial thermoplasty – a non-drug procedure for severe asthmatics whose asthma is not well controlled.

Manchester Interstitial Lung Disease Hub

The Manchester Interstitial Lung Disease Hub is the network lead for patients with Interstitial Lung Diseases, a condition that causes scarring of a particular part of the lung called the interstitium, this service coordinates care including novel biologic therapies.

Bronchiectasis Service

The Bronchiectasis Service provides multidisciplinary care – involving a range of health professionals – offering services including physical therapy and an Outpatient Antibiotic Service (OPAT) to patients with non-Cystic Fibrosis related bronchiectasis – a condition causing the permanent dilatation and thickening of the airways.

Occupational Lung Disease Service

The occupational lung disease service at Wythenshawe Hospital is one of only nine centres in the UK providing this important service. As a patient you will see a specialist in occupational respiratory medicine who will give advice on diagnosis, management at work and treatment of all lung diseases which might be due to work. We can also give advice and help on industrial injuries disablement benefits and common law compensation.

Severe COPD assessment

Severe COPD assessment provides specialist assessment of patients suitable for specialist, minimally invasive, intrabronchial coil/valve treatment for emphysema.

Manchester Long-term Ventilation and Weaning Service (LTVS)

The Manchester Long-term Ventilation and Weaning Service is one of the largest services nationally, coordinating care for patients with respiratory failure.

North West Chronic Cough Centre

The North West Chronic Cough Centre is one of only four tertiary services across England and Wales – receiving referrals from hospitals consultants regionally and nationally.

Lung Transplant Assessment

The Lung Transplant Assessment is one of only five UK Centres for Lung Transplantation. A specialist centre for lifesaving heart and lung transplant operations for the whole of the North West of England – covering a catchment area of over six million people.

North West Lung Function Laboratory

The North West Lung Function Laboratory provides complete assessment of patients with complex lung disease. Established during the 1950s, this is now one of the most well-equipped laboratories of its kind in the country.

The Lucis Diagnostics Centre and Pleural Service

The Lucis Diagnostics Centre and Pleural Service is a state-of-the art bronchoscopy unit offering high-tech minimally invasive fibre optic and ultrasound investigations to diagnose, stage, treat and research conditions of the respiratory system, including lung cancer. The centre also provides assessment for pleural disease, treated by our Pleural Service.

Lung Cancer Treatment Centre

The North West Centre for Lung Surgery is a leading surgical lung cancer centre, performing nearly 500 lung cancer operations annually and running a wide ranging research programme managed through the Thoracic Oncology Research Hub.

The Pulmonary Oncology Unit and Cecilia Centre

The Pulmonary Oncology Unit and Cecilia Centre provide rapid on-site evaluation and treatment for lung cancer patients as part of our Manchester Thoracic Oncology Centre.

The Medicines Evaluation Unit

The Medicines Evaluation Unit provide a 36-bed unit for early phase clinical trials, collaborating with MFT and the North West Lung Centre.
