We treat children and young people with kidney, ureter, bladder, genitalia and urethral problems that are either diagnosed ante-natally, or following birth, or developed in childhood. We offer specialised endoscopic and laparoscopic/robotic (keyhole) surgery.
We have a well-developed specialist nursing service based across two hospital sites, Trafford General Hospital and Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital.
Our Department it is designated as one of the two centres in the UK specialising in the management of children with Bladder Exstrophy-Epispadias Complex, and we have a multidisciplinary team (MDT) that treat children from birth to adulthood.
We also have dedicated services and MDT clinics for spina bifida, Disorder of Sex Development (DSD), cloaca, urinary stone, and varicocele. We also provide transition services for our complex patients.
Beyond the provision of clinical services, the department has always been proud to be a pioneer in paediatric surgical/urological research, reflected not only in innovation and advances in the field, but also in publications and representations in the most important paediatric surgical journals and forums. We have a strong teaching culture for all levels of medical training and our department attracts interns and fellows from all over the world. We offer a 2-year Sub-Specialty Fellowship certified by the ESPU and part of the Royal College of Surgeons Sub-Specialty Fellowship Programme in Paediatric Urology. The fellowship is based in Leeds and Manchester (one year in each of the centres).
