The Andrology laboratory is part of the Department of Reproductive Medicine and deals with semen analysis, retrograde examination, post vasectomy checks and sperm cryopreservation

By attending the Andrology department for your pre-arranged appointment, your consent to the analysis of the specimen is presumed. If you have any concerns on the day of analysis please inform a member of the Andrology team

Accreditation for Diagnostics to the standard ISO15189:2012

Andrology has accreditation to the following standard: ISO15189:2012 Medical laboratories — Requirements for quality and competence.  This has been assessed by the United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS).

Overview of Andrology

We currently provide diagnostic Andrology services to the MFT Oxford Road Campus and surrounding GP Surgeries.

  • Surrounding GP Surgeries
  • Tameside & Wythenshawe Hospitals
  • GP Surgeries located in the Tameside and South Manchester area
  • North Manchester (February 2023 onwards)

Patients intending to drop off a sample for semen analysis or post vasectomy MUST have a pre-arranged appointment. Please see the ‘Semen Analysis‘ and ‘Post Vasectomy‘ pages for details.

There is a dedicated entrance on Oxford Road, opposite Whitworth park. Access cannot be gained via the new Saint Mary’s Hospital building.

Take the stairs opposite the entrance, to the first floor. The Andrology Laboratory is on the right, around the stair well. There is disabled access  to the left (York Place) and right (Hathersage Road) of the building. If you are a wheelchair user, please telephone the department in advance (0161 276 6473).

Opening hours

Monday to Friday : 8.30 am – 4.00 pm
Saturday, Sunday and Bank Holidays : CLOSED

Specimens will only be accepted between 8.30 am – 3.00 pm.

Alternatively, the Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) team are available. Whether you are a patient, a relative, friend or carer, they will listen to your concerns, help make your voice heard and liaise with the relevant staff to sort out any problems quickly. Clinical Advice

The Andrology department has a team of HCPC registered Scientists to support interpretation of diagnostics.

A Clinical Scientist leads the unit, who can be contacted if needed and escalate to the Clinical Lead/Consultant Clinical Embryologist if required.
