Biography
Mr Newman graduated from The London Hospital Medical College in 1986. He undertook general medical training in London and Bournemouth before moving to ophthalmology training in Bournemouth and on the West of Scotland Ophthalmology Training Scheme.
He undertook clinical fellowships in paediatric and neuro-ophthalmology at the Royal Hospital for Sick Children in Glasgow, and in London jointly at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery (Queen Square) and Moorfield Eye Hospital.
Bill started his consultant career in 2002 at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital and St Paul’s Eye Unit in Liverpool. In 2016 he was appointed as consultant ophthalmic surgeon at the Manchester Royal Eye Hospital of which he became Medical Director in 2018.
Nationally he has held a number of positions including being Honorary Secretary of the Royal College of Ophthalmologist (2013 – 2107) and is currently Chair of Professional Standards at the College and is the appointed chair of the Secretary of State for Transport’s Honorary Advisory Panel on Driving and Visual Disorders.
Internationally he has participated with ORBIS and other charitable organizations to improve eye care.
In 2021 Mr Newman became full time Medical Director of both Manchester Royal Eye Hospital and the University Dental Hospital of Manchester.
