Neurosurgery

There is a comprehensive in-patient and out-patient service for children with all forms of emergency and elective paediatric neurosurgical conditions including trauma, hydrocephalus, craniofacial abnormalities, neuro-oncology, neuro-vascular conditions, epilepsy surgery, spina bifida and other spinal conditions.

The unit has special expertise in the investigation and management of children with spinal dysraphism, mucopolysaccharidoses, Moyamoya and other neurovascular diseases, brain tumours and epilepsy surgery through the NORCESS pathway. The CESS pathway is the regional centre with Alder Hey for managing epilepsy surgery. It also offers support to the Fetal Medicine Unit providing antenatal advice and counselling. There is regular contribution to the Cloacal extrophy and Neurofibromatosis MDT clinics. The neurosurgical unit works very closely with the neurological and neuro-oncological services providing comprehensive management of infants and children with complex neurological disorders.

Children who are under the care of the neurosurgery team are cared for on Ward 78.
