Breast Screening

Early detection of breast cancer often leads to simpler and more successful treatment and it is estimated that for every 500 women screened, one life will be saved.

Our aim is to provide you with an efficient and effective, high quality breast screening service, in a caring environment. Screening for women in Greater Manchester takes place at one of our static units at Withington Community Hospital and Oldham Integrated Care Centre, or at one of the four mobile units. The mobile units move around the area, staying at each site for a few months as indicated in the list of screening locations below.

You will receive your appointment letter three weeks before your appointment and will normally be invited to a location within the area of your GP’s surgery. If your invitation is not at a convenient location then please let us know and we can arrange an appointment to any convenient location where we are currently screening. Just complete the change your appointment form and we will rearrange it for you.

Our appointments are at five minute intervals. If you have been invited to a mobile unit and feel that you might need a longer appointment, please contact the Screening Office. During your appointment, a female radiographer will take two x-rays of each breast. Your x-rays will be read by two highly qualified and experienced film readers to look for any abnormalities and you will receive your results letter within two weeks.

If your result is normal, you will receive another routine screening invitation from your GP in three years’ time. If we detect an abnormality, you will be invited to come to the Nightingale Centre for further mammograms and it may be recommended that you need a biopsy. If you need a biopsy you will be asked to return to the Nightingale Centre for the results.
