Who is the service for?
The Macmillan Cancer Information and Support Centre is a calm, quiet relaxed environment away from the wards and clinical areas. The staff and volunteers in the centre can help you if you are affected by cancer and you are looking for support. We can also help if you are looking for information about any aspect of cancer.
This might be because you:
- want to know what you can do to try and reduce your risk of cancer, and what to look out for
- are affected by cancer, either as a person with cancer or a carer of someone with cancer
- are living with the effects of a cancer diagnosis and treatment
- want to find out about support available, including emotional and practical.
We can also help if you are a professional and want to know more about cancer and services available for people affected by cancer.
We are located at North Manchester General Hospital between C & D block, towards The Gallery Restaurant.
What does the service provide?
We can help by providing:
- information on all aspects of cancer and living with cancer, including leaflets, books, information in other formats and resources on the internet
- the opportunity for you to talk about what you are going through and to help you to make sense of what is happening, including help to understand information you have been given by the doctors and nurses looking after you
- links to the cancer teams when needed
- signposting to practical or emotional help and advice, including financial advice, and information about practical support that is available.
- You can access the service we provide either by visiting or telephoning the centre, or by emailing us. The service we provide is confidential.
Who will patients meet while under your department/service’s care?
The centre is staffed by the Macmillan Information and Support Service Manager and the Macmillan Cancer Information Assistant who provide information and advice to people using the service. Volunteers, many of whom have been affected by cancer, are also an important part of the service we provide by welcoming people visiting the centre and helping to put them at their ease.
The staff in the centre work closely with the cancer teams at Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust.
Where is the service available?
The Macmillan Cancer Information and Support Centre is open Monday to Friday from 10am until 3pm (except bank and public holidays). We advise you to please contact the centre to check opening hours before making a special journey to visit us.
An answering machine service is available when the centre is closed, so that people may leave their details and a short message and we will respond on the next working day.
