Perinatal Mental Health Clinic

We have developed a traffic light system by which patients are divided into high risk (red), intermediate risk (amber) or low risk (green).

Women with a history of severe mental health problems are at high risk of relapse in the perinatal period, therefore they require careful management throughout pregnancy and during the postnatal period.  This can minimise or prevent recurrence or worsening of the mental health illness which will reduce the impact of this on the woman and her family.

In our clinic we see women in the high risk category, including:

  • Bipolar.
  • Schizophrenia.
  • Severe depression.
  • Severe anxiety.
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
  • Obsessive-compulsive disorder.
  • Suicide attempt.
  • Family history of severe mental illness.

What do we offer?

Women will have a robust care plan which is tailored to their needs.  Our service provides comprehensive advice, psychiatric and psychological assessment, medication advice while pregnant and when breast feeding.

Where required patients are referred or sign posted to other agencies that offer help and support, such as housing, counselling services or support groups.  We also highlight and act on any safeguarding issues.

Clinics

Clinics are held in the Antenatal Department, Ground Floor, Saint Mary’s Hospital fortnightly on Wednesday afternoons.

How do I access this service?
