Preterm Labour Clinic

The criteria for referral to this specialist clinic are:

  • Previous spontaneous premature labour and delivery before 32 weeks’ gestation.
  • Previous premature pre-labour rupture of the membranes before 32 weeks’ gestation.
  • Previous 2nd trimester loss over 16 weeks’ gestation.  This excludes ‘haemorrhagic miscarriage’, missed abortion, etc.
  • Confirmed uterine abnormality, eg, bicornuate uterus.
  • Previous cervical surgery – knife cone biopsy, patients who have had 2 or more LLETZ procedures.

Women receive combined midwifery and consultant obstetric care, which includes an ultrasound scan of their cervix at every visit.  The frequency of visits is flexible depending upon the individual needs of the patient.

Our aim is to get the best possible outcome for women and their babies by using the most up-to-date techniques and treatments available.

The clinic also takes part in research, with patients sometimes being asked to take part in studies when they come for their clinic appointments.
