Orthopaedic Surgery (NMGH)

Who is the service for?

This service is for all adult patients that have either been referred in by their GP or seen as an emergency with all conditions and diseases affecting the musculoskeletal system. Paediatric patients will only be seen as referrals form the emergency department.

What does the service provide?

Orthopaedics is the branch of surgery concerned with conditions involving the musculoskeletal system. Orthopaedic surgeons use both surgical and nonsurgical means to treat musculoskeletal trauma, sports injuries, degenerative diseases, infections, tumors, and congenital disorders. North Manchester General Hospital offers comprehensive trauma and Orthopaedic services which cover upper limbs (hand, wrist, shoulder and elbow) and lower limbs (pelvis, hip, knee, ankle and foot). The most common operations or procedures undertaken are: –

  • Hip Replacements
  • Knee Replacements
  • Pelvic Reconstruction
  • Ankle Replacements
  • Shoulder Replacements
  • Joint replacement in the hand, wrist and elbow
  • Keyhole surgery (arthroscopy) of the shoulder, elbow, hand and wrist
  • Tendon and nerve surgery
  • Treatment of fractures
  • Joint resurfacing
  • Treatment of foot problems for example bunions, hammer toe and foot trauma and fractures

When is the service available?

The Trauma and Orthopaedic surgery service is available 7 days a week for all emergency referrals and Monday to Friday for non-emergency out-patient referrals from your GP.
