The Pharmacy Department provides services to patients cared for at the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital (RMCH), Manchester Royal Eye Hospital (MREH), Manchester Royal Infirmary (MRI), Saint Mary’s Hospital (SMH), Trafford General Hospital, University Dental Hospital of Manchester and those cared for by our Community Services.
Pharmacy’s role is to support the safe and effective use of medicines for all our patients. We do this through a number of teams of highly trained pharmacists, technicians, assistants and support staff who specialise in different aspects of medicines use which is illustrated on the service map below:
The Pharmacy Department is established as a clinical support directorate and employs approximately 250 staff, including pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, dispensers, assistant technical officers, information analysts, clerical officers and porters. At any one time, up to 6 pre-registration pharmacists and 4 pre-registration technicians are undergoing training with us.
As would be expected for a major teaching hospital complex and we open our pharmacy seven days a week and have staff on site 24 hours a day in order to ensure medicines and pharmacy advice is available at all times.

In-Patient Pharmacy, is located on the 4th floor in RMCH and is made up of:
- Central pharmacy stores
- Inpatient specialised ward dispensaries
- Medicines Information Service
- Clinical Trials Area
- Sterile production unit
- Non-sterile manufacturing unit
- Clinical offices including management, training and clerical functions.
- Adult Out-Patient Pharmacy, located on the ground floor in the MREH atrium
- Children’s Out-Patient Pharmacy, located on the ground floor in RMCH.
