About us
Audiology involves the assessment, treatment, and ongoing management of hearing and balance disorders. MFT’s Audiology service is based at Withington Community Hospital and we also run clinics at Wythenshawe Hospital.
We provide an excellent service using state of the art equipment and the latest digital technology. We are also one of the first hospitals in Greater Manchester to gain accreditation from UKAS – the United Kingdom Accreditation Service. This means that we are a nationally recognised service following best practice guidelines, ensuring everyone who is seen will receive the best quality of care.
What will happen at the appointment?
At the initial appointment, a complete history will be taken, followed by a hearing test. We will talk through the results with you. If suitable, you may be offered a hearing aid. If you are happy to try this, an appointment for a fitting will be arranged. Your hearing aids will be set up and tested and the audiologist will explain how to use your hearing aids and maintain them. A follow-up appointment may be arranged either in person or over the phone to check on your progress and ensure you are getting on well with your hearing aids.
Hearing Aids
Some of the benefits of hearing aids include:
- Amplifying sounds in your environment to match your level of hearing loss
- Masking tinnitus – the persistent sound of ringing or other sounds such as buzzing
- Improving hearing in one-to-one conversations, groups, and when watching TV
Hearing Aid Servicing and Repairs
Our hearing aid service and maintenance counter is the hub of the Audiology Department. There is a booked repair service for batteries, servicing and basic repairs.

Balance Assessments
Balance disorders can sometimes be caused by problems with your ears which is why your doctor may refer you to our audiology department. Your balance assessment will involve a series of tests to investigate your balance system, which take up to two hours. Depending on your results, our doctors may prescribe medication, arrange further tests, or we may offer a balance rehabilitation programme to help you cope with your imbalance.
Wax Removal
It is important that you are checked for wax prior to your appointment as this may prevent a hearing test from being performed. Wax removal appointments can be booked by your GP as below. If you are an existing patient, please contact us to arrange a short appointment to have the ears checked for wax.
If you need wax removal, we can give you a form for your GP to fill in and return to us.
How Can I Be Referred to the Audiology Service?
Usually, you will need a referral from your GP. Once a referral has been received, we aim to see you for an initial assessment within a few weeks. However, during the coronavirus pandemic our service is not running as normal and waiting times are likely to be significantly longer.
