The Whitworth Clinic is an NHS abortion care service. We are a team of healthcare professionals who offer a fully confidential, non-judgemental service for persons of all ages. You can be assured that you will be treated with dignity and respect.

We can offer the following:

Initial assessments for those considering an abortion, counselling both pre and post abortion, various treatment options, follow up service, contraception and STI screening and an abortion service for the management of problems in pregnancy.

Abortion methods provided (dependent on meeting specific criteria):

  • Early Medical Abortion (2 stage process using tablets) – up to 9 +6 weeks of pregnancy (may have the option of treatment at home).
  • Late Medical Abortion (2 stage process using tablets) –10 weeks up to 19+6 weeks of pregnancy.
  • Out-Patient Surgical Abortion (surgical procedure using local anaesthetic and oral pain relief)- up to 10+6 weeks of pregnancy.
  • In-Patient Surgical Abortion (operation under general anaesthetic) – up to 19+6 weeks of pregnancy.

We also provide:

  • Contraceptive services and provision. Types of contraception offered include oral contraceptive pills, implant, injection and coils (copper and hormone).
  • Sexual health services, including advice and screening.
  • Counselling before and after the abortion.
  • Specialist service for patients with complex medical problems.

Where will I be seen?

Initial consultations will often be via pre-arranged telephone call lasting approx. 30-45 mins.

Any face-to-face visits will take place in our clinic situated in the Gynaecology Out-patient Department, ground floor, Saint Mary’s Hospital, Manchester.

You may also attend other departments within our hospital during your visit.

Please note our surgical abortions routinely take place at our other trust sites at North Manchester and Wythenshawe hospital and not at St Mary’s.
