Manchester Adult Cystic Fibrosis Centre (MACFC) has an international reputation for ground-breaking research in cystic fibrosis (CF). We have a long history of success in translational research and clinical trials, which provides a positive impact on treatment and symptom management for people with CF.

Our researchers are credited with improving CF care the world over. Some key studies have been highlighting the importance of exercise as a therapy; understanding and managing CF bone disease; showing the importance of patient segregation in preventing cross-infection; and highlighting the value of people with CF being looked after by a dedicated multi-professional team in a specialist centre.

We also run clinical trials, which are carefully designed studies that allow researchers to test new medicines or ways of improving care for CF patients, and are essential to the continued improvement of medical treatments in CF.

Research makes it possible for CF care to progress and develop and we are very grateful to our patients for playing such an important part in this. All our team members are encouraged to attend and present work at national and international conferences, where we learn about the most important advances in cystic fibrosis and bring this knowledge back to improve care for our patients.

We are a member of the CF Trust Clinical Trials Accelerator Platform, and one of 6 early phase CF trial centres supported by the charity. We are also a member of the European CF Society Clinical Trials Network. We work with both the Medicines Evaluations Unit and the NIHR Manchester Clinical Research Facility to deliver trials.
