Ward 81 - Burns Unit - Royal Manchester Children's Hospital

The Burns Service consists of a 10 bedded ward for inpatients, in addition to our ventilated patients being housed in the general Paediatric Intensive care unit (PICU) and ambulatory care provided in our Burns and Plastics Aftercare Clinic (BPAC). Our Burns Service manages over 1000 new patients every year, from birth up to 16 years of age that have sustained a thermal injury.

We cover the Manchester area, extending into Lancashire, Cheshire and as far north as the Lake District. In addition, we look after patients from Yorkshire and Humber if they require complex burns care e.g. burns over 30% total body surface area or less and or require ventilatory support.

We are a highly dedicated multidisciplinary team caring for burn patients with acute injury, including critical care, right through to their rehabilitation and post-burn reconstruction.

Our Philosophy of Care at Ward 81

Whilst your child is a patient on Ward 81, we aim to provide a high standard of care by:

Offering you, your child, and your family emotional and empathetic support
Liaising with other health care professionals to give you a quality service.
Encouraging parental participation in care
Action as an important member of the health care team
Empowering children and their families by respecting and understanding each child’s social, physical, emotional, and spiritual needs’.
Acting as the child’s advocate by ensuring needs and rights are respected and provided.

We have a number of parent facilities that we are happy to explain if your child is in need of overnight admission or longer.

Visiting Ward 81

Parents/carers have open visiting hours and access to the ward, but we ask that patients have a maximum of 3 visitors per stay (including parents/carers). These visitors should be the same 3 people throughout your child’s stay, but only 2 visitors can be present on the ward at any given time except at night. Only 1 out the 3 named visitors can stay overnight.

At 8pm the lights on the ward will be turned off, we will ask the visitor not staying overnight to leave the ward to allow the children to sleep.

The number of visitors and times for visiting, are subject to change in line with Infection Prevention and Control guidance.

No child under 16 years old, can visit the ward at any time.

How to find us

Burns and Plastics After Care Clinic is based on the ground floor at the front of the children’s hospital near the entrance.

Burns Service is based on the 1^st floor of the children’s hospital on the same corridor as critical care.
