Update homebirth service

News posted 22 October, 2024

MFT is currently reviewing and refreshing the homebirth service model which will support a robust, high quality safe and equitable service for pregnant women and families across our city.

The service being provided was not sustainable with, in particular, staff sickness absence and issues with rotas which has meant we have had to tell pregnant women at short notice that they could not have a home birth as they had hoped.

We have suspended our current home birth service to avoid the situation where pregnant women were expecting NHS support for a homebirth and then being told at short notice that this could not be provided.

This move does not affect the midwifery-led care at the Bluebell Birth Centre at North Manchester General Hospital or the Manchester Birth Centre at Wythenshawe Hospital.

The links below provide further information regarding both centres:

Alternatively there continues to be midwifery-led care on any of the three Labour Wards across the Saint Mary’s Service at Saint Mary’s Hospital, Wythenshawe Hospital or North Manchester General Hospital.

This move does not affect ante-natal or post-natal care in any way.

If you have any questions about the situation then please ask your community midwife in the first instance.
