The North West Lung Centre at MFT is an internationally renowned specialist centre for the treatment of respiratory conditions and allergies, the largest in the UK and probably in Europe.

We have over 40 clinical consultants including 10 Clinical Academic Professors at the University of Manchester. This is a partnership between the University of Manchester and MFT NHS Trust. We undertake pioneering clinical research into respiratory diseases and allergies, as well as aiming to provide the highest quality care for our patients. The Department of Respiratory Medicine is led by Dr Richard Barraclough.

The respiratory system is the set of organs that makes it possible for us to breathe and exchange oxygen and carbon dioxide throughout the body. This consists of the nose, nasal passages, lungs, pharynx, larynx, trachea, and bronchi. Respiratory medicine deals with a vast range of diseases and conditions affecting these parts of the body.

In some cases, patients who are referred to us have already been diagnosed with a respiratory condition or allergy. Alternatively, your GP might refer you to our services because you have unexplained chest pain, cough, breathlessness, or other symptoms.

North West Lung Centre

The North West Lung Centre (NWLC), based at MFT, is one of the world’s leading lung treatment and research centres and provides a full range of specialist respiratory services. The centre serves around 5.4 million people across Manchester and North West England, and beyond. As well as looking after local patients in our clinics and six respiratory wards, we also offer a complete range of specialist and tertiary outpatient clinics.

We are home to the North West Lung Research Centre – a pioneering centre for treatment and research. We also house the NIHR Manchester Clinical Research Facility.

If you need lung surgery or lung transplant, this will be carried out by the North West Centre for Lung Surgery within the North West Heart Centre building and transplant unit.
