Midwifery Opportunities – Saint Mary’s Hospital Managed Clinical Services

Our Saint Mary’s Fetal Medicine Units are made up of highly experienced fetal medicine consultants and specialist midwives. In addition, there are other specialist doctors such as neonatologists, geneticists, paediatric surgeons, fetal cardiologists and neurosurgeons who offer counselling and will take over the care of babies with abnormalities after they are born. There are also fetal medicine subspecialty trainees and sometimes visiting medical students, midwives, and neonatal nurses.

The maternal and fetal health research portfolio at Saint Mary’s Managed Clinical Service is extensive, including research into pregnancy problems such as pre-eclampsia, fetal growth restriction (FGR) diabetes, lupus and pre-term labour. Working in partnership with The University of Manchester we utilise a breadth of research methodologies with the aim of improving maternity care and pregnancy outcomes. Saint Mary’s has become known as one of the region’s top centres for midwifery research and we are very lucky to have this facility in Manchester.

The maternal medicine service is led by a team of specialist midwives who work with obstetricians and specialist physicians who have expertise in the management of a range of medical conditions. Several different specialist clinics make up the maternal medicine service. The MMC provides multidisciplinary (midwifery, obstetric and medical) care for women with a variety of medical conditions including respiratory problems, inflammatory bowel disease, women with cancer and women with kidney disease. As well as providing specialist care and support within the Tuesday afternoon clinic, the teamwork alongside specialists in medical problems from across the hospital. The team also provide care for women who are planning to have their baby at another hospital, but for whom some expert advice is needed – for example to discuss the safety of a specific treatment or investigation during pregnancy. The maternal medicine team is part of a larger network of medical specialists who work across the hospitals in the Northwest to share clinical experience.

I love helping to deliver babies and being part of one of the most valuable experiences in a woman’s life.

Since joining MFT, I’ve really benefitted from the preceptorship programme that allows us to develop skills in maternity with the support from our experienced colleagues. If you are lucky enough to be shortlisted for a role you apply for, you will be contacted by our Recruitment Team via email, and they will inform you about the selection process.  This will vary according to the role but typically this process will be carried out virtually via the application MS Teams so you’d need to ensure you have a device or access to a device that would allow you to use this.   Alternatively, you may be asked to attend in person to one of our locations.

Virtual or face to face selection processes may include exercises as straightforward as a Technical & Competency Based Interview but for certain roles, there may also be additional exercises built into the process to enable us to really tests candidates in various different ways, so we gather a more diverse picture of people’s abilities.  These could typically include Stakeholder Engagement Exercises, Problem-Solving Exercises, Role Plays, Analysis & Report Writing Exercises, Situational Judgement Exercises but again, this will look different depending on the role you have applied for and the process will be designed solely to enable our MLCO/TCLO team to adequately assess your skills and experience required to be successful in the role.
