• formulate a search question using methods such as PICO
• carry out an advanced search using Boolean logic, thesaurus mapping and other advanced techniques

Consists of 7 short modules designed to help you build confidence to search published literature for articles and evidence relevant to your work, study and research.

Critical Appraisal
This is a two hour group session which provides an overview of critical appraisal techniques. Some pre-session reading of a journal article is required. This will be critically appraised in a group discussion in the second half of the session.
You will learn how to:
• identify different study designs used in research
• locate various critical appraisal checklist tools
• critically appraise a clinical trial and a systematic review
• interpret statistics commonly found in research articles such as P values, meta analysis, odds ratios, confidence intervals, forest plots diagrams
One hour individual (or small group) session
A one to one session on critical appraisal with a librarian
You will learn how to:
• identify different study designs used in research
• use a critical appraisal checklist tool to critically appraise a clinical trial or systematic review
• understand where to look for statistics commonly found in research articles and what they mean
If you would like to analyse a specific paper, please inform the librarian and send a copy at least two days in advance of your session.

Topics covered include:
• The principles and value of reflection
• Meeting requirements for revalidation / CPD
• Models and techniques to structure your reflective writing
• Using critical thinking to inform your reflection
Attendees will leave the session with their own written piece of reflection.
