The Raised Body Mass Index (BMI) in Pregnancy Clinic is a specialist service dedicated to caring for women who book their pregnancy with a BMI greater than 35.
We adopt a non-judgemental and woman-centred approach to help women make realistic healthy choices that are sustainable at the end of pregnancy. We offer practical advice to promote a healthy lifestyle, including guidance on healthy eating, exercise and weight maintenance
Women with a BMI of 35 to 39 are cared for in the Midwifery led wellbeing clinic
Women with a BMI of 40 and above are cared for in the Consultant led clinic
We offer:
- Individualised risk assessments for all woman. Some women will require low molecular weight heparin (blood thinning injections) as a result of this to reduce their chance of developing a blood clot in the legs or lungs
- Vitamin D supplementation
- Screening for gestational diabetes
- Referral to a dedicated dietician to provide support antenatally and in the postpartum period
- Referral for consultation with a Consultant Anaesthetist to have a detailed discussion regarding pain relief in labour and anaesthetic options
- Additional growth scans to assess fetal wellbeing
We will also liaise closely with other specialist maternal medicine clinics where appropriate

Wythenshawe – the Midwifery led wellbeing clinic is held on a Monday mornings, the Consultant clinic is held on Monday afternoons
Lance Burn Health Centre (Salford) – the Midwifery led wellbeing clinic is held on Wednesday morning.
