The Care Quality Commission (CQC) is the independent regulator of health and adult social care services in England. Its purpose is to work together with the public, systems and providers of care to protect people and to promote and improve the quality of care. If a service needs to improve, CQC will take action to make sure this happens. Find out more on the CQC website.
Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust was formed on 1 October 2017, and we received our first CQC inspection in 2019.
The CQC overall rating is displayed on the homepage of our website and is: Good.
A comprehensive inspection of the Trust took place in Autumn 2018, and the results were published in March 2019. You can find the details of this report on the CQC website.
The CQC follows six key lines of enquiry (the way in which they measure services), which are Caring, Safe, Effective, Responsive, Well-led and Use of resources. Caring was rated Outstanding, with the other five rated Good.
Two of our hospitals were rated Outstanding – the Manchester Royal Eye Hospital and the University Dental Hospital of Manchester.
The Manchester Local Care Organisation, which provides comprehensive community services across the City of Manchester and was formed in April 2018, was also rated Good.
Child and adolescent mental health wards (CAMHS) were inspected in March 2026 and were rated Good.
Our Maternity Services were inspected in July 2023 and were rated Requires Improvement.
Although the CQC report highlighted several areas of good practice across our maternity services, we were naturally disappointed with the overall rating. We have confidence in our ability to improve maternity services for women and their families and have embarked on a focused programme of improvements.
Our improvement plan was developed and has been delivered with the support of stakeholders including the Maternity Voices Partnership, who said:
“As Maternity Voice Partnership leads, we have been impressed with the immediacy and seriousness with which senior leaders at the trust have responded to CQC’s inspection findings. […] The MVP continues to work with the trust to drive continuous improvement of personalised and safe maternity care and to ensure services are co-produced with the people who use them.”
