Professor Matt Makin

Interim Joint Chief Medical Officer

A Mancunian by birth, Matt became Interim Joint Chief Medical Officer in September 2025, with his substantive role being Medical Director for the North Manchester General Hospital Clinical Group.

Over the past ten years, Matt has worked as Medical Director at two of the largest health organisations in England and Wales. Prior to this he has held national leadership roles in NHS Wales, in Neurology, Neurosciences and Cancer. Matt has been a doctor for 32 years, training in Palliative Care Medicine at Liverpool and Birmingham and appointed to his first Consultant post in 2001.He worked in research at the Pain Relief Foundation in the 1990s developing treatment protocols for the analgesic use of Methadone.

Matt returned to Manchester in 2016 as Medical Director of Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust and was involved in the early work with Sir Jonathan Michael establishing a Single Hospital Service for the City of Manchester. He is passionate about addressing inequalities in health, quality improvement and the role of clinical leadership in improving health systems. While interim JCMO, Matt continues to practice as a Consultant in Palliative Care Medicine. Matt is also an Honorary Professor of Health and Behavioural Sciences at Bangor University.

Matt is a proud Schnauzer owner, a Stockport County FC fan, is married to Rebecca (a local GP), and is a proud father to three children.
