Stephen Smurthwaite
Public Governor (Rest of England and Wales)
Public Governor for Rest of England and Wales
Over the last five years I’ve used the Trust extensively for A&E, inpatient, outpatient and diagnostic services. This has given me great insight into how the Trust works, what is excellent and what could be improved. In particular I’m aware of the issues faced by people living some distance away.
My early career was in NHS finance in Greater Manchester. Eventually I became a Trust Finance Director in Lancashire. Later I was a partner in an accountancy firm and helped many NHS clients. My job involved working with NHS Directors around the country to improve their service plans and performance. I think this experience means I’m well placed to meet Governors’ responsibilities for assurance of the Trust Board, as I know and understand the processes involved.
I’d love the opportunity to use the knowledge and experience I’ve gained to help the Trust evolve in line with the wishes and needs of patients and their families. Being a Governor would be an opportunity to ‘give back’ as a thank-you for everything the NHS has done for me and ensure others in our community receive just as good or even better services.
I believe I’m a hard-working, analytical and dependable team member, qualities which will be important to fulfil the role of Governor. As I’m recently retired I will have the time needed to dutifully carry out the responsibilities of the role.
I’m married and have two grown up children. I love music, cycling and taking my dog for long walks.
