Please note: separate blood samples for each laboratory discipline are required – Mycology, Microbiology, Immunology, Biochemistry and Haematology.

Sample requirements for each test can be found in the Procedure catalogue in HIVE for colleagues within the Trust or on ICE for colleagues in the community. Information can also be found in the Biochemistry test information document.

If you require a test that is not available to request on your system, please contact the Duty Biochemist during normal working hours to discuss.

Sample transportation

CSF, precious samples and samples that must reach the laboratory within a set time must not be transported by pneumatic tube.

Add-on tests

The majority of tests can be added onto an initial collection within 24 hours. Some tests are more stable and can be added on up to 3 days. Urine samples are stored for 2 days, all other samples are stored for a minimum of 3 days and then discarded. For Trust colleagues, add on tests should be requested using the HIVE system. For colleagues in the community, please use the following phone numbers:

For samples sent to North Manchester: 0161 604 5389

For samples send to Oxford Road: 0161 276 5180

For samples sent to Trafford: 0161 746 2480

For samples sent to Wythenshawe: 0161 291 2136

Sample information

Age and sex related reference ranges are available from the laboratory and will be provided with reports, providing sufficient patient information is given when requesting. Biochemistry samples should be filled to the line to allow enough sample for analysis. If tests are urgently required then please contact the Duty Biochemist during routine working hours or, outside these times, bleep the on-call BMS.
